One of the things that many people do not understand
about the
handicaps in the game of golf is the enjoyment
that playing with an established handicap can bring to the
golfer.  Very few of us are professionals or can play at the
top amateur level.  But, we can all enjoy golf.  The
improvement that can make the playing field level among all
golfers is the application of a handicap system.  This levels
the playing field for all ages, sexes, and abilities - resulting
in more enjoyment for the participants of the game.

No matter what score you shoot, you are competitive with
other golfers.  Your "good" rounds are recognized as
"good", even if the score is much higher than "par" for the
course.  If you are playing in a "competition", even if it is
against your spouse or best friend, it is how you shoot
compared to your handicap that counts, not just what your
final score is.

Over time, progress can be viewed as lowering your
handicap, not just comparing how well you shot against par.
And, over time, if age is causing your handicap to go up,
you are still competitive.  As your scores go up, your
handicap does too, resulting in "net scores" that may be
similar to what you shot in the past.

One very helpful tip regarding handicaps is how they can
assist in the mental aspects of the game.  In effect, there is
no "bad" round of golf.  A golf round is either good because
you obtained a relatively low net score, or it is good
because it is a high score that may help to raise your
handicap, which may help a future round.  This is a win-win
situation for any golfer.

Mental aspects are very important to the game of golf.
Handicaps help you maintain a positive attitude and get the
most enjoyment that you can out of this unbeatable game.
