A common mistake that new golfers make is comparing
what they shoot on a hole to par.  Par is for "scratch", or
zero handicap, golfers.  New golfers need a different
"target" other than par.

When you first start playing golf, set a target for yourself at
something like "par + 2" for each hole.  Over 18 holes,
assuming that par for the course is 72, your target would be
72 + 36, or 108.

But, more importantly, you have a target for each hole that
is reasonable.  For example, you just played a par 4 hole.
You got a 7.  That's not that bad, only 1 over your target.  If
you had shot a 5,  you might think "Wow, 1 under target -
that's almost like a birdie".   Having a realistic target for
each hole is a good way to set your expectations
reasonably and enjoy your golf more.

Over time, adjust your target accordingly by half a stroke.
From "par + 2" move to a "par + 1.5" target.  At "par + 1.5",
for the par 4 hole, a 5 is good, a 6 OK, a 7 not all that bad,
etc.  And, a "par + 1.5" target brings your overall target
score under that magic "breaking 100" number.

After your first few rounds of golf, you will have a good idea
where to set that first target.  It could be "par + 4" or
whatever you need to make expectations realistic and golf
more fun.  Just don't make "par" your target.
